Deep conversations

Dear Dad –

Today, I was thinking about the difference of children nowadays versus back when I was child. I was reflecting on the conversations I heard adults having and even the conversations I had as a child. Back when we did not have these devices called smart phones to distract us from each other. Back when we didn’t just talk about the Youtube video we watched or we didn’t just take a pic to keep a Snapchat streak going. Are we teaching our children how to have deep conversations with their family and friends? Or are they just learning how to communicate with abbreviations and emojis? Are we teaching them how to ask deeper questions or just surface level questions about how someone is doing?

I hope to encourage my children to have deep conversations with the grandparents they have left. Otherwise when they pass many stories, answers, and explanations will go with them. I hope they do not waste any more time and instead can learn from the wisdom their grandparents have to give. Here are a few questions I should have asked you, Dad.

  1. What happy memory will you cherish forever?
  2. Growing up, who inspired you the most?
  3. What is your biggest regret?
  4. What amazes you most about society nowadays?
  5. What do you miss most about the good ole days?
  6. What did you discover in the last decade of your life that you wished you would have discovered sooner?
  7. What do you remember most about your wedding day?
  8. What do you wish you made more time in your life for?

I hope my friends and my children take the time to ask their loved ones these questions before it is too late. Don’t worry I will ask Mom these questions and maybe we can come up with your answers too.
